Stud Wall Framing: New Frames and Altered Walls
House framing establishes the timber structure before linings and finishes conceal it. For new stud wall framing, MEL ONE works from the issued layout, member sizes and connection details; for an altered wall, the existing construction and proposed change need review first. An opening for a door or window affects more than its visible width, so the brief should identify the full opening and its relationship to adjoining framing.
A renovation that exposes damaged studs needs a repair decision before the wall is closed again. Record the accessible damage, what supports the wall and which members are proposed for retention or replacement. Load-bearing alterations and repairs remain conditional on the responsible professional assessment, design and required project arrangements; a carpentry visit alone does not settle those questions.
Roof Trusses, Rafters and Floor Joist Interfaces
Roof and floor framing must connect to the wall system described in the project documentation. Truss layouts, bearing points, rafters, floor joists and their connections need consistent information so one trade does not build an assumption into the next trade's work. A change to an opening, wall position or roof geometry should be referred back to the responsible designer before affected members are ordered or altered.
Discuss lifting access, delivery space and the route for long members early, especially on constrained renovation sites. The framing package should identify the timber and connections included and where supplier, builder and engineering responsibilities begin. Roof coverings, weatherproofing and service installation are separate interfaces to coordinate with the relevant trades.
Current Drawings, Set-out and Framing Materials
For a framing quote, send the current architectural, structural and supplier drawings and tell us the build stage. We check that revisions agree before setting out wall lines, openings, stair voids and service allowances. Unresolved dimensions or conflicting details need an answer from the responsible project party before the affected work starts.
Supply and materials: confirm who orders and supplies timber, proprietary connections and trusses. The member, treatment and exposure follow the project specification rather than a similar-looking substitute. Keep the material schedule with the current drawings so omissions or changed details can be resolved before installation.
Access and deliveries: describe the route for long members, lifting access and where deliveries can be stored and protected. We review those arrangements with the framing scope before the quote is agreed.
Framing Sequence, Checks and Trade Handover
Installation needs an agreed order for wall frames, bracing, roof members and any floor system, with access and temporary stability considered throughout. Set practical hold points for project inspections while connections and bracing remain visible. If a revised detail affects installed work, agree how it will be addressed before another trade covers it.
MEL ONE's carpentry review covers accessible alignment, openings, connections, bracing and obvious damage within the agreed work. Those trade checks do not replace required building inspections or engineering sign-off. Record outstanding items, inspection responsibilities and what is ready for roof, cladding or internal trades at handover.
House Framing Quote Inclusions
We price house framing against the issued drawing revision and the areas or members required. Before quoting, we agree whether the package is labour-only or includes timber supply and installation, and discuss lifting, access, temporary support, connections, removal and reinstatement. Inspection and engineering responsibilities are identified separately in the agreed scope.
Keep the quoted drawing revision with approved changes. Revised openings or concealed damage can alter labour and materials; agree the added work and price before installation. At handover, record completed framing, inspection status and outstanding items for the next trade.
Framing Plans, Inspections and Quote Questions
Can framing start from architectural drawings alone?
Architectural plans may leave member sizes, bracing or connections unresolved. Structural details and truss or supplier information need coordination with the responsible designer or engineer. Use matching drawing revisions and resolve missing details before the affected framing starts.
Who checks the frame before it is covered?
Agree the required inspections and the responsible builder, engineer or certifier in advance. MEL ONE's carpentry checks do not replace statutory inspections or engineering sign-off.
What changes a framing quote?
Compare quotes against the same drawing revision and member schedule. Supply versus labour-only work, trusses, connections, bracing, lifting access, temporary support and ties into existing construction can change the allowance. Ask which inspections and other project responsibilities remain separate and how revised drawings or concealed damage will be priced before extra work proceeds.
